Are you considering putting home on the market soon? Prior to doing so and scheduling an open house for potential buyers, go through this checklist to ensure your home is spotless and ready for viewing…
- De-Clutter: This cannot be overemphasized enough! A cluttered home, filled with junk, can be the breaking point for some potential buyers. A potential homebuyer could easily get injured from the junk in your home, and also get distracted throughout the open house as well. De-cluttering your home is a must prior to any open house or showing.
- The White Glove Test: Clean, clean, and clean! Scrubbing your bathtub, sweeping, moping, etc. is a given. Also consider scrubbing your carpets, polishing your floors, and paying extra attention to the spaces that often get left out. The cleanliness of a home is crucial for a potential homebuyer.
- Revive & Repair: A fresh coat of light, neutral paint is practically obligatory. If you have decent hardwood under grungy or outdated carpet, consider trashing the carpet and refinishing the floors. Take care of scuffed woodwork, ripped wallpaper, water damage and exposed wiring. Half-finished home improvement projects deter buyers.
- Enhance Curb Appeal: Most potential buyer can make an assumption about a home just by pulling into the driveway. Would your home make the cut? Pay attention to the little things and use your critical eye when looking at your home from the curbside. Are your gutters overflowing? How does your driveway look?
- Lawn & Order: How does your lawn look? Does it need some major attention? Prior to an open house, do whatever it takes to make your lawn look picture perfect. It’s not too late to plant some trees and flowers to really make it stand out. Don’t forget interior landscaping: if you have no healthy houseplants inside your home, buy a few attractive specimens and locate them strategically around the house. Dump any dead or dying plants.
- Depersonalize: Put away family photos, children’s artwork, trophies, pet toys, etc., to help buyers imagine themselves in your home. Clear all the junk off the fridge; the kitchen will look bigger and cleaner.
- Out of Sight: Prior to letting potential homebuyers into your home, be sure to put all personal things away. Such as credit cards, bills, jewelry, camera, etc. If it is valuable to you, or you do not want anyone else to see it, put it away.
